ARE YOU LONELY
Zines offer a versatile platform for creative expression, transcending conventional boundaries of art and publication. They have become a meaningful vehicle for manifestos, providing structured guidelines for actions and approaches. This project focuses on creating a manifesto centred on ethics in design across key topics like the environment, Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR), representation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). AR and VR technologies enable immersive virtual experiences, notably in gaming, but raise concerns regarding real-world boundaries and prolonged isolation. While VR showcases the potential of 3D design, its realism poses risks, including exposure to triggering themes and detachment from reality. The manifesto aims to guide game designers in prioritizing player well-being while delivering engaging experiences. The project's tone blends solemnity and absurdity to evoke empathy for gamers, reflected through its colour palette and media choices. The manifesto adopts a solemn colour scheme with cyberpunk-inspired accents, symbolizing the dystopian nature of virtual reality. Illustrations combine surrealism with flat drawings, etching, and harsh shadows to convey the surreal and unsettling effects of prolonged gaming. Overall, the zine manifesto serves as a critical discourse on ethical considerations in design, urging creators to balance innovation with responsibility toward users' mental health and well-being. Through its aesthetic and content, it prompts reflection on the ethical implications of immersive technologies and the importance of mindful design practices.
