LIFESTRAW- FAK'UGESI

Fakʼugesi is an annual design festival held at WITT University, aiming to lead South Africa's design and arts innovation. This year’s theme focuses on creating an Augmented Reality Poster that addresses an environmental issue in South Africa, aligned with the #moreflow initiative. With climate change significantly impacting the country, about 40% of South Africans lack access to clean drinking water, leading to around 842,000 annual deaths across Africa due to water-related diseases.

The augmented reality poster features the LifeStraw, a filtered straw designed with microfibers that effectively remove dirt, bacteria, and parasites from water. The illustration animates the LifeStraw, raising awareness about water contamination in South Africa and emphasizing how access to clean water can enhance quality of life. Clean water not only provides essential health benefits but also improves brain function, connecting to the theme of “more flow” and the idea that clean water fosters creativity and innovation.

The visual style of the poster embodies the festival’s themes of afro-futurism, merging traditional elements with a vision for sustainable innovation. The color palette includes deep purples and blues contrasted with vibrant orange undertones, symbolizing the difference between polluted and purified water. The illustrations feature flat colors and bold shading reminiscent of cyberculture, linking back to afro-futurism. Dramatic line art adds depth to the visuals, reinforcing the message of sustainability as a pathway to a brighter future.
